Nurul Izzah
Nurul Izzah Anwar is the current Member of Parliament for Permatang Pauh, serving her third term in the Malaysian legislature. Her political career began with the creation of the People’s Justice Party (KEADILAN) in 1999 where she played a vital role in its establishment.
To this day, she remains a member of the KEADILAN after serving as the political party’s thrice elected Vice President from 2010-2018; as well as the party’s Co-Election Director in the 13th Malaysian General Elections.

Prior to being an MP, Nurul Izzah was known as a strong proponent of political and civil rights with a special interest in prisoners of conscience, bent on pursuing a holistic reform agenda to expand Malaysia’s democratic space.
Empowering Women
She is a founding member of the previous Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement Caucus and member of the Women’s Caucus, and is on the committee of the Inter-Parliamentary Union Malaysia. Currently, she serves on the Public Accounts Committee and is KEADILAN Spokesperson for the Ministry of Women, Family, and Community Development.
She is also an active member of the All Party Parliamentary Group Malaysia for the Reform of All Places of Detention (APPGM), where she continues to reiterate her calls for national prison reform.
Education
Prior to entering politics, Nurul Izzah earned her Masters’ Degree from the School for Advanced International Studies, Johns Hopkins University studying International Relations (with a specialisation in Southeast Asia Studies). She received her Bachelors’ Degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from University Tenaga Nasional, graduating in 2004, two days after her father, Anwar Ibrahim, was released from six years of politically-motivated imprisonment.
National Reform Initiatives
She is a strong advocate for Parliamentary reform; during her tenure she pushed for legislative power to be returned to MPs through the formal debating of Private Member’s Bills. Since 2011 she has brought forward seven Private Member’s Bills, including the Industry Skills Education And Training Commission Bill 2018, the Racial and Religious Hate Crime Bill 2016, the Sedition Act (Repeal) 2013, the Petroleum Development Act 1974 (Amendment) 2012, the Printing Presses And Publications Act (Repeal) 2012 and the Revocation of Emergency Bill 2011.
2021 and beyond
Her current work on the ground revolves around projects that empower the most vulnerable segments of her constituency. Some of her initiatives as MP for Permatang Pauh include Program ROSE in collaboration with Universiti Malaya (a cervical cancer screening program for underserved women), the Permatang Pauh Women’s Project (upskilling B40 women), and the 2021 Permatang Pauh Multidimensional Poverty Study headed by Professor Fatimah Kari, a forerunning expert in Malaysian poverty.
She also recently launched ‘Talian Prihatin’, a telephone service providing free mental health support catered to her constituents. Run by trained volunteers, the hotline offers private individual counseling, while also operating as a port of call for victims of domestic violence.
